Celebrating 150 Years of Thurlow Nunn in 2025

2025 marks Thurlow Nunn’s 150th anniversary, and we are thrilled to be able to share this important milestone with our customers, partners and friends.

150 years is a long time in any walk of life. But in business, achieving this milestone is something special. Our longevity is testament to the vision of our founder, George Thurlow, and those who have taken the Thurlow Nunn on to new heights over the years.

We are delighted to reach 150 years and we will of course be celebrating this anniversary in style over the course of 2025.

Back to the beginning

The history of Thurlow Nunn dates back to 1875, when George Thurlow began trading as an oil blender and belting manufacturer in the town of Stowmarket in Suffolk.

George Thurlow then shifted his attention to the supply of steam engines and threshing tackle, before expanding into agricultural machinery and becoming one of the country’s leading distributors in this field.

Over the following decades, the company grew substantially and was taken over by George Thurlow’s great grandson, John Thurlow, in 1968. A few years later, a merger with F J Nunn, a Massey-Ferguson dealer, saw the company become Thurlow Nunn & Sons.

The company’s work in the automotive space started in 1982 with the purchase of a small interest in a Stowmarket Vauxhall garage. This was the first step into an industry that we are thriving in today, with Thurlow Nunn turning over in excess of £20 million annually and selling more than 8,000 cars every year.

As well as our motoring business, the Thurlow Nunn Group also includes Thurlow Nunn Standen – a company specialising in agricultural machinery.

Today, Thurlow Nunn’s chairman and chief executive, James Thurlow, is continuing the family’s legacy. James is the fifth generation of the Thurlow family to lead the company and hopes to build on the incredible foundations we are proud to have in place.

Raising money for a good cause

Although our 150th anniversary is undoubtedly a celebration of how far the company has come over the years, we want to take the opportunity to incorporate fundraising for charity into the year’s events.

Sadly, James Thurlow’s father John passed away from Dementia last year, and the events this year also present a chance to celebrate John’s life and work.

What’s more, we are committed to supporting charities that support people with Dementia, and have set ourselves the target of raising £150,000 for Dementia UK in our 150th year.

As part of this, we will be hosting a number of special events throughout 2025.
