Guide on how to drive safely this winter

The nights have drawn in, we seem to be always in the dark, whether it’s leaving for work, or driving home, and the ice scrapers and big coats have emerged from their hiding places. Yes, winter has arrived and we’re all feeling the chill.

It’s important at this time of year that you don’t let your driving senses freeze over, and you keep your wits about you whilst out on the roads.

Here at Thurlow Nunn, we want to make sure you are ready for every eventuality, so we have pulled together our best tips to be prepared for the conditions this winter, so you can sure you don’t get left out in the cold.

PREPERATION IS KEY

If you’re not prepared this winter then you could very well end up stranded, follow our tips below to ensure you’re ready for any situation:

• Consistently cold temperatures will impact the way your vehicle starts and the way it runs. So, above all else you need to make sure that your fluid levels for oil, water and, particularly, your anti-freeze are topped up.
• Make sure your tyres are inflated and to the right pressure, because when the temperature drops, so does tyre pressure.
• Winter means less daylight to drive in, so be sure that all your lights are working correctly and that you have replacement bulbs handy, just in case.
• Make sure you get your car battery tested early so it’s in good working order and can survive whatever the elements throw at it.
• Always keep your petrol or diesel tank at least half full. When you start running on an almost empty tank, condensation and moisture will build in the system - and if this freezes your car, you simply won’t be able to get it started.

BE EQUIPPED FOR EVERY EVENTUALITY

When faced with cold and aggressive weather, it can be very unsettling and dangerous if you find yourself in a broken down vehicle - particularly with no provisions.

That’s why it’s just as important to consider what’s best for both yourself and your car if the bad weather brings your journey to a sudden halt. So, before starting your trip, why not put some emergency supplies in the boot, such as:

• Appropriate footwear should you need to leave your vehicle
• De-icing equipment (for glass and door locks)
• Spare bulbs
• First aid kit
• Fire extinguisher
• Torch
• Blanket and additional clothing
• Food and water
• Mobile phone charger
