Thurlow Nunn’s Car Buyer’s Checklist

With so many options on the market and new technologies being introduced all the time, having the chance to test drive and buy a new car is always something to get excited about.

But with all the eagerness to get hold of your dream car, it’s easy to overlook important factors that will ultimately have a big effect on how your new car ownership plays out.

If you are in the process of planning a new car purchase, here is a handy checklist to follow. Take a look through our car buyers checklist and ensure you have all areas covered!

Step 1 - Assess your budget

As a starting point, it is vital you establish what you can afford to spend on a new car.

Also consider whether you are able to buy a new car outright or on finance. If the latter is a better fit for you, look at what you can afford as a down payment and what you can afford to spend each month.

There are plenty of online affordability tools out there to help you make the calculations around this, so be sure to take the time to get your head around what you can afford.

Step 2 - Explore the market

This is one of the most exciting parts of buying a car. Make sure you do thorough research into the make and model you want to invest in, and align this not only with what you can afford, but what you need from a lifestyle perspective.

As well as the look and feel of the car, do not overlook factors such as fuel efficiency, as this will have an impact on your long-term running costs.

Step 3 - Consider electric

As part of your research, make sure you look into the electric options available on the market.

This is the way the car industry is moving, and there are a number of benefits from electric car ownership – not least the lower emissions you will be creating.

Anybody seeking a new car would be foolish not to consider going electric in this day and age, so make sure you consider all options.

Step 4 - Test for yourself

Once you have found a make, model and engine type you like, it’s time for a test drive. And if you are considering several new car options, you probably need to arrange multiple test drives!

This is an important step, as a test drive gives you the opportunity to get a feel for a vehicle, taking in its comfort, handling and overall performance. You can also notice any elements you do not like, as well as any standout features that really capture your attention.

Also look for any signs of wear and tear, be sure to check the vehicle’s maintenance history, and essentially make sure that everything is working as it should be.

Step 5 - Evaluate finance and calculate total ownership costs

If you are going to be purchasing your new vehicle via finance, then it is important to thoroughly review loan terms, interest rates and down payment requirements before committing to anything.

There are many lenders out there, so be sure to assess all options. You may also want to look into leasing, as this may be a better fit for your budget and your overall driving habits.

It is also important to budget for expenses like fuel, insurance, maintenance costs and depreciation, as these will all be factors in the total cost of ownership for your vehicle.

Step 6 - Finalise the Purchase

Once you have gone through these stages and found a vehicle you like and can afford to purchase, it is time to get everything finalised.

Be sure to review all documentation, including sales contracts and any financing agreements that are in place, before signing your name on the dotted line.

Once that is all sorted, it is time to make the required payments, get your keys and drive off with your brilliant new vehicle.
