What is a cambelt?

A cambelt, otherwise referred to as a timing belt, is a vital component which ensures the engine works properly. It allows the camshaft and crankshaft (located at the top and bottom of the engine, respectively) to synchronise. This enables air and fuel to enter and exit at exactly the right times.

An unaligned cambelt will prevent the engine’s pistons from firing at the correct times. If this happens, the engine will lose power, more fuel than normal will be used and serious engine damage will occur, resulting in a steep repair bill.

Essentially, attempting to make a cambelt last longer than it should is a false economy.

When should I make a cambelt change?

Cambelt replacement every 40,000 to 100,000 miles (or four to five years) is recommended, and is dependent on a car’s make and model. Your vehicle’s user manual should provide you with the necessary information, as should the manufacturer. Some vehicles use a timing chain rather than a cambelt, which is more durable. This is because it’s made from metal, whereas a cambelt is primarily comprised of Kevlar and polyurethane. A timing chain can last anywhere from 80,000 and 200,000 miles, although this is very much dependent on the car’s make and model, and other factors.

Obvious signs of a faulty cambelt

If a cambelt isn’t fitted precisely, one or all of the following symptoms will likely occur:

• The engine has problems starting
• There’s a significant drop in engine power
• Rough running (loud noises and vibrations emanating from the engine)
• The engine easily overheats
• The engine stutters and/or misfires (as a result of a faulty combustion reaction)
• The engine stalls frequently
